and mr. ryan's supposed principles on that issue. we talked about that moments ago with chris hayes. but there are two things that i think are hugely important to the presidential campaign that happened last night. two things that i, frankly, never thought we would get to. and that we got to and, boy, howdy, is this new territory. first was this. >> you asked, do i feel free? let me put it to you this way. i earned capital in the campaign, political capital and now i intend to spend it. it is my style. that's what happened in, after the 2000 election. i earned some capital. i've earned capital in this election, and i'm going to spend it for what i told the people i'd spend it on. which is you've heard the agenda. social security and -- >> social security, first on the list. when george w. bush won re-election in 2004, the first thing he said he wanted to spend his political capital on, first on the list was social security. specifically what he meant was privatizing social security. no more social security safety net, just hand it ov

what mitt romney and paul ryan were saying. the point where mr. romney interrupted mr. ryan was when he said, you know, he was just acting so -- and romney jumped in, careful. careful. ixnay on the talking. at his first post-debate appearance today in wisconsin, vice president joe biden took the final topic of last night's debate, issue of abortion rights and hit paul ryan with it pretty forcefully. >> if anyone had a doubt about what's at stake in this election, when it comes to women's rights, and the supreme court, i'm sure they were settled last night. it was made clear last night that they don't believe in protecting a woman's access to health care. it was made very clear that they do not believe a woman has a right to control her own body. these guys have a social policy out of the '50s. >> that was joe biden's first major campaign appearance today after last night's big event with paul ryan. now, paul ryan's first public appearance after last night's debate was not that moment on the tarmac with mitt romney with the funny microphone, it was actually this. his cam

so that line of questioning here for mr. ryan was understandable. maybe even predictable. but beyond the newsworthiness of paul ryan getting up and taking off his microphone and ending the interview and beyond the newsworthiness of the campaign going after this reporter, there was what that reporter was able to elicit from paul ryan. there's his prescription for what it takes to get out of poverty if you live in the inner city. >> the best thing to help prevent violent crime in the inner cities is to bring opportunity in the inner cities, help people get out of poverty, help teach people good discipline, good character. >> are all people who are poor only poor because they have not been taught good character? or only poor people in the inner cities who are poor because they don't have good character? they don't have good discipline, they need to be taught that. you watching at home, do you not make a lot of money? was there a time you didn't have a lot of money? is that because you have bad character? if i were the romney/ryan campaign i would probably try to trash that re

in mr. ryan's debate practices the role of vice president joe biden is being played by celebrated conservative attorney and former george w. bush solicitor general ted olson. ted olson is not your average former bush administration official. he is the former bush administration official who's been leading the legal effort to overturn california's ban on gay marriage and maybe every state's ban on gay marriage. he is very, very, very, very conservative. but he is on the pro gay side of this marriage fight. today at nyu's law school i got a chance to interview ted olson and his co-counsel the celebrated democratic attorney david boyce. they fought against each other in bush v. gore in the 2000 election but they are fighting together on the side of marriage equality in this federal case. and ted olson is the one of course who sticks out like a sore thumb here. he's a straight, married guy. he does not have a gay family member who has driven him to this decision. he has decided as a small govern

mr. romney would draw his own red line far before president obama's red line. then a few days after that, on september 17th, same deal again. here's mitt romney at a latino issues presidential candidates forum, saying that the guy who wrote the arizona's papers, please, law, he's never met the guy. no idea. he doesn't know why he keeps say that guy is his immigrations adviser. seriously, mitt romney has never met kris kobach? no, not really. his campaign later coming out and telling cnn, never mind what mitt romney just said, he has met the guy who wrote the papers, please, law, kris kobach does advise the campaign. then a few days after that on september 25th, they went and did it again. here's mitt romney conceding one of his most frequent attacks on president obama. this was mitt romney at a rally that day admitting that president obama has not raised taxes while he has been in office. seriously? mitt romney is dropping that argument? he doesn't think president obama has raised taxes?
